What is Shingles? Shingles is a painful viral attack involving the nerve endings of the skin. Shingles are caused by the herpes zoster virus which is the same virus that causes chicken pox in children. An initial attack of shingles often begins with itching, burning or intense pain of the involved area which then turns into rash like blisters. Shingles can appear anywhere on the body in the form of these small painful blisters but is most commonly found ‘banding’ the abdomen and chest areas. These herpes zoster blisters normally last anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks but the pain can often continue long after the blisters disappear. There is no cure for shingles. The Herpes Zoster virus resides in the spinal nerves and can remain dormant for many years until triggered. Shingles Attacks typically occur at times associated with stress, fatigue and lowered immune system. |
