General Description: Rumex acetosella is a slender weed with erect simple branching stems that emerge from a rosette of leaves and can reach 6 to 18 inches in height with flowers. Rumex acetosella is classified as a noxious weed by the US government and is not to be confused with the Garden salad variety of sheep sorrel known as Rumex acetosa. Chemical Composition: Contains oxalates in the form of oxalic acid and calcium oxalate, anthraquinones, tannins, flavonoids, and various vitamins. Pharmacology or Biological Activities: Traditional/Historical Medicine: Sheep sorrel has been historically used for inflammation of the respiratory tract, purification of the blood, antibacterial therapy, liver and biliary aliments, scurvy, fever and cancer treatment.
