General Description: Trifolium pratense is a biennial or perennial herb with rose to purple flowers with usually three leaflets; up to 0.8 m high. Native to Europe and naturalized in North America. Part mainly used is the flowering top. Chemical Composition: Isoflavones such as biochanin A and genistein, flavones, coumarins, trans & cis-clovamide, trifoliin, phaselic acid, sugars, protein, volatile oil, cyanogenic glycosides, minerals including magnesium, copper, calcium and phosphorus. Red Clover produces phytoalexins in response to viral or fungal infections. Pharmacology or Biological Activities: Traditional/Historical Medicine: Used extensively in alternative cancer formulas and treatments including breast, colon, prostrate, melanoma and lung cancers. Also used for glandular disorders, as a blood purifier, diuretic, sedative, antitussive for whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis, skin sores & ulcers, sore eyes, burns and menopausal symptoms in the form of teas, infusions or salves. Safety Issues: Not for those taking blood thinning agents. Do not use during pregnancy. |
