General Description: Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial herb that grows up to 1 m high; the part used is the dried root collected from 4 to 7 year old plants. Although Astragalus is extensively cultivated, most are native to northern China, Suichuan, Yunnan and Tibet.

Chemical Composition: The root contains saponins, polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides, flavonoids, sterols, free amino acids and trace minerals.

Pharmacology or Biological Activities:
Astragalus Root is highly valued in Chinese medicine and is considered an herbal tonic comparable to ginseng. Numerous human and animal experiments have reported immunopotentiating effects: stimulates macrophages, promotes antibody formation and increases T lymphocyte proliferation. Also antibacterial, antiviral, anti inflammatory, has cardiovascular effects including hypotensive and vasodilating, liver protection, antioxidant effects, improved learning and memory, promoting cartilage growth, diuretic and improving stamina. these activities are mainly attributed to the many saponins and polysaccharides present in the root.

Traditional/Historical Medicine: Traditionally used for improving the body's resistance or immunity. Astragalus has a recorded history of over 2000 years use to promote diuresis, reduce swelling, regenerate tissue, heal chronic sores, drain abscesses, relieve painful joints and as an overall energy tonic. Modern usage includes treatment and prevention of colds, liver protection for hepatitis, strengthening body defense therapy in AIDs treatment and as an immune enhancing adjunct to radiation and chemotherapy for cancer treatment.
